Candyland & Kill Paris Dominate Royale Boston
Thursday nights may not be the most popular nights at Royale in Boston, but Candyland and Kill Paris didn’t let a half packed venue stop them from putting on an insane show.
Getting into the the club was a breeze, no long lines, a quick pat down, and then we were in. Royale is a pretty cool venue themed to look like a retro Miami club, but it could definitely use a little love as some of the lighting fixtures looked really old and the floor was kind of dirty. One thing I will say is that the sound system is pretty awesome there. Royale went out and spent the money for a powerful D&B line array that pummels you with bass and has crystal clean highs. Hopefully you’re a baller because drinks cost a cool $10 here so be prepared to leave with a nice tab. The coat check is $3 as well, I mean really? On to the music though.
Candyland opened things up and from start to finish they controlled the crowd and took care of fans from every genre. They dropped their remixes of “LRAD”, “Snap Your Fingers”, “Gangsters Paradise”, and many more, but they also played popular tunes like “Revolution” by MAKJ and M35, “When I Say Go” by Jacob Plant, “The Crowd” by GTA, and “Mosh Pit” by Flosstradamus. Much to my surprise they even played “This Is How We Do It” and “Chop Suey” by System of a Down which the crowd went nuts for. They worked the mic expertly and got the crowd singing along to all the right songs which always makes for a good environment. This was my first time seeing Candyland live and I have to say I was extremely impressed with them, they’re versatile and know what to drop and when to drop it. They aren’t the best at mixing, but they make up for it by being able to work the crowd and having great song selections. You can see some cool Vine videos of Candyland killing it here.
Kill Paris came out to a fairly hyped up crowd and did not disappoint. To be honest I’m not a huge dubstep fan and I didn’t really recognize most of the music that he played, but it didn’t matter because I was out on the dance floor the entire time. His set was incredibly smooth and sexy with ridiculously good transitions so it was like the best part of your favorite song was on the whole time. I had heard from some friends that he was insane at Webster Hall, but nothing could have prepared me for how good this performance was. A few tracks I did recognize that were crowd favorites included the Kill Paris remixes of “Baby Come Back” and “Play That Funky Music White Boy”, a remix of “Take Me Home” by Cash Cash, and “Bootleg Fireworks” by none other than Dillon Francis. After hearing Kill Paris live I can now confidently say I’m a fan and I will definitely be attending another one of his shows in the future. I already went and downloaded all the free tracks from his Soundcloud account, so if you haven’t done that I highly suggest doing so.
Overall I think the Candyland/Kill Paris combo is a great one and they’ve still got more shows left on their tour together so if you can get tickets to see them I’d recommend seeing them.
